What if the next Frontier AI Lab was build in the Nordics?

The Next Frontier AI Challenge is a pan-European initiative launched by Germany, France, and the European Commission at the 2025 Summit on European Digital Sovereignty and led by SPRIND (the German Federal Agency for Breakthrough Innovation). It supports teams in building globally competitive European frontier AI labs focused on advancing core AI technologies. The program provides €125M in non-dilutive funding across three stages for 10 teams, with a pathway to up to €1B in additional backing for the most promising labs, aiming to ensure Europe helps create, not just adopt, the next wave of frontier AI.

Europe has the talent, the research heritage, and the values to lead in AI. What has been missing is the infrastructure to turn those strengths into frontier breakthroughs. Next Frontier AI changes that.

About Next Frontier AI Challenge

The programme is a 24-month challenge starting in July 2026, backed by €125M in non-dilutive funding. Up to ten teams will receive support to build frontier-lab capabilities (team, infrastructure, prototypes, evaluation, and pilots). The best-performing teams will then receive structured support toward raising approximately €1B each to establish globally competitive European frontier AI labs.

What’s the challenge?

Create a lab that works on the core technology behind AI, not just another application or feature. Your job is to explore new ways to lay the foundations for powerful models, so Europe is not just adopting the next wave of AI but creating it. The focus is on deep, long‑term questions and concrete technical progress, grounded in a clear sense of responsibility for how this technology will shape everyday life.

What if the next Frontier AI Lab was build in the Nordics?

We see this as a strong opportunity for the Nordic region to come together and mobilize its combined AI expertise, talent, and entrepreneurial capacity. By coordinating across the Nordic ecosystem, we aim to cultivate ambitious teams, strengthen collaboration across institutions and countries, and reinforce the region’s capacity to play a leading role in shaping Europe’s next generation of frontier AI labs.

To support this effort, we are joining forces with SPRIND alongside Digital Research Centre Denmark (DIREC), The Danish Data Science Academy (DDSA), AI Sweden, and other partners to identify, cultivate, and support strong Nordic teams to enter the challenge.

We are looking for

  • Ambassadors (entrepreneurs and organisations) to support and connect teams while creating awareness of this opportunity across their networks.

  • Researchers working on foundation models, agentic systems, or next-generation AI architectures

  • PhD Students or Postdocs in ML/AI with ambitions beyond academia

  • Engineers from frontier labs (DeepMind, Meta AI, etc.) considering building their own lab

  • Teams working on radically new approaches (SSMs, world models, neuro-symbolic AI, efficient training paradigms)

  • Persons at big labs wondering "could I do this myself?"
